Science came alive this week at Borrowdale Brooke Academy as our budding scientists explored the fascinating world of chemistry in the school’s state-of-the-art science lab. The experiment? Investigating the relationship between glucose concentration and the colour changes in the Benedict’s test—a classic experiment that combines curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
“The joy of discovery is certainly the liveliest that the mind of man can ever feel.”
Dr. Linus Pauling
The Experiment
With their lab coats on and goggles secured, students eagerly prepared to mix varying concentrations of glucose solutions with Benedict’s reagent. The goal? To see how different levels of glucose affect the colour of the reaction mixture when heated.
🔬 “It was incredible to watch the solution go from blue to green, then orange, and finally brick-red as the glucose concentration increased,” shared Tinashe, a Form 3 student. “It really helped us understand the concept of reducing sugars in such a hands-on way.”
The Benedict’s test, a staple in biology and chemistry, highlights the interaction between reducing sugars like glucose and Benedict’s reagent. As the students observed, the brighter and more intense the colour change, the higher the glucose concentration. This visual representation allowed them to truly grasp the chemistry of sugar detection—one reaction at a time.
Experiments like this go beyond science—it’s about fostering curiosity and inspiring future innovators. BBA’s emphasis on interactive, hands-on learning ensures that every student develops problem-solving skills and a deep appreciation for the scientific method.
Promoting STEM at Borrowdale Brooke Academy
At Borrowdale Brooke Academy, we pride ourselves on creating opportunities for students to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in a meaningful and exciting way. From our well-equipped science labs to dedicated teachers who bring learning to life, BBA is shaping the scientists and innovators of tomorrow.
Whether it’s experimenting with glucose or diving into robotics, our students are given the tools and encouragement to unleash their full potential.
The Benedict’s test may seem like a simple experiment, but for BBA students, it was an unforgettable dive into the wonders of chemistry. This hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of science but also ignited a spark of curiosity that will carry them forward.
Stay tuned for more incredible discoveries and achievements from our students here at Borrowdale Brooke Academy. Science is just the beginning!
